I still remember waking to the chirp of the birds as I lay in the rear bunks of our 2016 Rezerve 27BH fifth wheel, my sister rolling around below me, and brother groaning across the way in the sofa-bed. Mom and dad were still fast asleep on the queen bed up front. They had so much wardrobe space, they had clothes for every occasion, though I’m not sure why my dad brought a tuxedo camping. One by one we tumbled towards the bathroom, taking turns in the warm shower, brushing our teeth in a sleepy line, the mirror in the vanity fogging with steam while we tried (not well) not to elbow each other. By the time we stepped outside, hair dam and feet bare in the cook grass, the day already felt like an adventure waiting to be had.
Dust shot out from behind our bikes as we flew down the trails, and with only one heroic wipeout on my part. Scraped up and laughing, we returned for lunch as dad flipped burgers on the camp kitchen’s 2-burner stove—he even added an additional propane hookup if we happened to be hosting. Earning a cold beverage, we grabbed them from the mini-fridge and ate our victory meal by the fire, the smoke curling around us, and before even swallowing our final bites, we were back on two wheels, racing down the gravel path like nothing could slow us down.
That was until the clouds came in. With the downpour we were soaked from the tips of our hair to the soles of our feet and rushed inside to change and dry. After the sudden thudding and sloshing of water bodies, we settled, Dad on the couch with the entertainment centre on, and my siblings at the ‘U’ dinette playing a board game as I helped mom with dinner. I yanked ingredients from the fridge and pantry to chop on the solid countertops as mom threw them in a pan on the 3-burner stove, the smell overtaking the entire unit. We stacked the used dishes in the dual sink for later and joined everyone at the table. As we ate together, the windows fogged as our voices rose over the drumming rain. The woods had darkened from the storm and I stared, knowing this was the kind of memory that never washes away.
