We wake to the ocean’s quiet call, a soft breeze seeping through the open window, carrying the scent of salt and sand. She’s already up, stretching and smiling as the first light of dawn spills over the queen bed up front in our 2012 Cruiser CTX Series 28RKX. I follow her into the bathroom, the cool air mixing with the steam of the standing shower. After brushing up in front of the vanity, I pull on my beach clothes from the slide-out wardrobe and grab the surfboard from the exterior pass-through storage. The waves call us to the water, the salty spray splashing our faces as we race toward the horizon. For this moment, the beach is the best place to camp.
The mountains are a different kind of quiet, their towering presence peaceful if not a little imposing. We’ve been hiking this rugged trail for hours, narrow and winding, and as we reach the trailer again, standing tall like a steadfast sentinel, our stomachs growl. I raid the fridge and pantry in the rear kitchen, chopping vegetables and meat on the extensive, solid countertops, the aroma of onions and garlic sizzling on the 3-burner stove. We throw the dishes in the dual sink for later. With a pep in our step, steaming plates in hand, we slip outside, gathering around a new fire as the heat mixes with the cool mountain air, a breath of relief. Yet, I can’t say if the mountains are the place to camp.
The storm comes on fast in the prairie, dark clouds rolling in, the wind picking up like it has something to prove. We take shelter inside—us and another adventurous couple—the trailer a quiet haven as the thunder cracks and shakes us. I sit at the round dinette with Bill, cards in hand, while my wife and Barb stretch out on the long leather couch, their chatter a comfortable hum. The entertainment center adds a steady rhythm that softens the fury outside. But still, I’m unsure. We’ve camped by the ocean, the mountains, and the prairies, yet I don’t know where the best place to camp is. Maybe we’ll have to make this circuit again before we truly know.
