When I woke up in our 2008 Jay Flight 27BH travel trailer, I could smell pancakes sizzling on our 3-burner stove—one, two, THREE! Mom flipped them high in the air (almost hit the ceiling!), while I grabbed syrup and orange juice from the fridge that hummed like a bee. “Careful!” Mom laughed as I nearly dropped the jug of juice. We washed sticky fingers in the white dual sink—splish, splash, swoosh! Then we ate outside under the big, flappy awning that made shade so cool and breezy it felt like breakfast in the clouds.
After breakfast, we played ALL day. Running through the trails, splashing each other by the lake, and laughing until our cheeks hurt (and red, can’t forget how red they were). When the sun started to hide behind the trees, we roasted s’mores and hot dogs, even squishing them together into a gooey, chocolatey, salty masterpiece! Inside, my siblings and parents crowded around the booth dinette, playing board games as I sat on the sofa-bed flipping through the newest OWL Magazine. Dad did his best “owl hoot,” and we laughed so hard Mom nearly spilled her cocoa.
When the yawns finally won, we took turns in the shower—shhh! the water hissed and steamed—and brushed our teeth at the separate vanity by the bunks. I claimed the top bunk (after a big pillow fight with my sister!), while Mom and Dad snuggled up front, tossing their dirty clothes in the bin under their queen bed. As the night sounds outside soothed me, my sister pointing out what every sound was, I thought how perfect it all was. I know it won’t last forever, we have school coming up, but boy do I wish it could. Maybe tomorrow I’ll make it last longer.
