Taming the beast wasn’t easy, and in fact took a lot of pizazz, but 10-year-old Max along with his family traverse the wild kingdom of Canada in their domesticated 2017 Flair 31B Class A motorhome (the chassis was built in 2016). As dawn tiptoes through the windows, Max springs from the 6-foot mid-unit bunks, heart galloping and drumming reveille to rouse his sister Ruby below, scampering towards mom and dad in the rear bedroom, and his older brother Darren up front in the bunk over the cab. Heroic all in their own way, they parade through the spacious bathroom, water thumping in the standing shower, and the grand vanity sprawling with toothbrushes and oils. Freshened up, they armour themselves with clothes summoned from the drawers beneath the bunks and the wardrobe in their parents’ chamber.
The campsite shimmering into a battlefield, Max and Ruby brandish sticks blazed into a dragon-slaying lance, vaulting over roots as Mom and Dad survey the realm kept safe under the shade of the power awning. The eldest sibling crouched by the fire pit, embers glowing as the smoke corkscrews into the atmosphere.
Unfurling with banners of amber victory, the evening comes swift and with it rumbling stomachs. Yielding its treasures, Ruby plucks food from the fridge to have Dad dice upon the solid countertops, as Mom stands by the 3-burner stove as the peppers sing a jubilant hymn. They convene at the booth dinette to feast, the dual sink collecting the remnants for the eldest to clean. Later, as the realm softened, Mom and Dad nest on the sofa-bed, full in their important books as the older brother takes a voyage on his tablet in his bunk. As for Max and Ruby, they whisper plans for tomorrow’s quest, their motorhome humming softly, a chalice of many journeys to come.
