Sweat beads off Richard’s brow as he rounds the corner, reaching the campsite, his 2003 Topaz 275LE fifth wheel standing guard. They’ve been through a lot and they’ll go through a lot more. He rests under the awning, his trusted folding chair from the massive exterior storage compartment comfortable in its simplicity. But soon, his stomach rumbles and it’s time to indulge and treat himself to a home-away-from-homecooked meal in the rear kitchen. The fully stocked fridge makes it a little daunting to choose what to eat, but he quickly fires up the 3-burner stove, chopping veggies on the solid countertops, and the dirty dishes pile up at the dual sink to be cleaned later. Seated at the free-standing dinette, he devours dinner, and sets up his game plan for tomorrow—it’s only a 5km hike to the lake, maybe he’ll go for a swim.
He kicks back in the theatre seats with a Zane Grey novel in hand, the same one he kept telling everything he’d get to it someday. The living area has always been a bit sparse, but Richard prefers it that way. It’s calmer. Reminds him of a simpler time.
As night creeps in, the blue hue of the moon piercing through the large windows, he calls it a day and hustles to the bathroom, taking a shower in the tub, and drying off with a towel from the deep linen closet. He’s always appreciated the additional privacy between the full vanity and toilet. All freshened up, he slinks under the covers of the queen bed, the silky sheets cooling as he prepares for another sweltering day as the morning comes.
