Your Flash Intro to Banff National Park

Drink in the genuine experience of a fairytale mountain town. Like stepping into a Hallmark movie, Banff is a postcard perfect, coffee and hot chocolate, lemonade on the porch, ski, swim, hike, all year every year destination.

History at a Glance

Only 150 km from Calgary lies Canada’s first national park. The Town of Banff rests within the park of the same name, and not only is it the first national park of Canada, but the town was the first municipality to be incorporated in a national park in Canada, back in 1990. Furthermore, it’s one of the four adjacent parks that make up the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can delve into the history of the area, its arts and culture, Indigenous people, and the evolution of the town and park throughout history while also enjoying gorgeous mountain views all year round (with only a slight chance of freak snow storms in May) and also take part in numerous different outdoor and indoor activities. It sounds cheesy, but there is truly something for everyone here.

Pet Friendly?

Dogs are allowed in Canada’s National Parks as long as they are accompanied and on a leash. Watch for any signs for trails where your pup may not be permitted! Avoid leaving your pet unattended at your campsite or in your vehicle, that’s no fun for them or safe, and always clean up after them. Banff does boast two off-leash dog parks; if your pup is a social butterfly, let them make some new friends and enjoy the fresh air together. A tired dog is a happy dog.

If there comes a point where your furry friend can’t accompany you, look into one of the doggy daycares in Banff Town proper for temporary lodging. Remember, you’ll probably have to book ahead so plan accordingly!

Camping Opportunities

Banff offers a range of campgrounds of varying affordability and perks, but all with some of the best scenery in the world. Operation dates vary between sites, with the summer camping season beginning in May with all campgrounds open by mid to late June. Campgrounds begin to close in September, going into October however, winter camping is available at Tunnel Mountain Village 2 and Lake Louise Campground. Backcountry  camping is also available along backpacking trails for the more rugged adventurer.

Reservable lots can be booked online through the Parks Canada website, where you will also find specific open and closure dates.

***Note: Be sure to follow proper fire protocol and safety, Fire Permits may be required.***

Partake and experience one of the world’s natural wonders. Banff is a globally recognized oasis of mountain calm and beauty – and it’s in our backyard!
