Can You Dump Your Black Tank On the Ground?

Common sense isn’t so common these days, and this is one we really wish didn’t have to be spelled out but: dumping your black tank anywhere that isn’t designated is apparently something we have to be explicit about.

And, if you’re a new RVer there are probably some questions you have regarding dumping your black tank. So let’s begin.

Is It Legal to Dump Your Black Tank on the Ground?

No.

It’s also amoral. Now let’s move on to why.

First: It’s gross. Think about what ends up in your black tank, what goes down the toilet. Would you want that anywhere near you? No, of course not. But it’s more than just nasty.

Harmful to the Environment

Human waste is harmful and toxic to the environment, not just plants and other people, but what we often forget about is the aquatic sector. Not just lakes and rivers, but groundwater as well. Dumping your black tank on the ground anywhere can pollute any nearby water source due to runoff.

Toxic Algae: Black water can lead to explosive growth of toxic algae that can lead to serious health concerns in animals and people. Exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and even liver failure or death.

Another reason is the, err, mix-ins shall we say that can end up there. Think about it: chemicals you add to help breakdown waste, if anyone is taking medication. Dumping this stuff can make anyone, and anything, sick.

Long term exposure can even lead to long-lasting or fatal illnesses in people and humans. It’s one of the reasons sewage workers have so many safety precautions.

In short: dumping your black tank or any kind of sewage can and will kill the environment.

Now it should go without saying, but this also counts to dumping ANY of your tanks in water sources or street drains. We depend on clean freshwater sources to survive.

Remember Leave No Trace, have you ever seen signs on hiking trails prohibiting animals? These areas are often the watershed, meaning the water directly supports everyone living nearby. These areas don’t want to risk water contamination from even your dog, what do you think they’ll do if they catch you dumping your black tank? A fine may be the least of your worries.

Where to Dump?

A campsite with full hook-ups is the simplest, just connect your black tank to the sewer hook-up and you’re good.

Boondocking or a campsite without sewer hook-ups mean you’ll have to find an RV dumpsite. These are legally approved and the ONLY places you should ever dump your tanks!

Any illegal dumping (including black tanks) will result in a fine at minimum.

Want to Avoid Dumping Black Tanks?

If you don’t want to deal with black tanks you can always opt for a composting toilet

To sum up: Black tanks are everyone’s least favorite part of RVing, but there’s a right and wrong way to deal with your RV tanks – make sure you’re on the right side. Protect the environment and each other and use a proper dump station for your tanks.
