Campground Etiquette
There was always that one kid, you know the one, he was always pushing the teacher’s buttons, he made rude noises during class, his desk was always sticky for some reason. Yeah him, that kid always got the entire class in trouble, he wasn’t the class clown he was the class anarchist. Everyone’s out for a good time, which is a nice way of saying: “Don’t be that guy.”
To avoid that here’s some basic rules – really, basic common sense that I’m sure you already know. Feel free to mail this list to your rowdier friends as a gentle reminder.
- OBSERVE CHECK-IN/OUT TIME
Arrive at or after check-in time and leave before check-out time. Now obviously there’s going to be things that can mess with your timing – maybe you got attacked by a Canada goose at the last rest stop, it can happen. Just do your best to be respectful of everyone’s time.
- RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBORS
Do not walk through other campsites and keep all items on your side. We’ve all heard the neighbor from hell stories. Keep to your own space, no invasions!
- BE MINDFUL OF YOUR NOISE LEVEL
Keep all noise at a decent level at all times. Campgrounds are public, which means that yes you’re to expect a certain level of noise from your neighbors at all times, but respect that your type of relaxation and vacation will differ from someone else’s and this goes both ways. Daylight hours mean people are going to be louder, don’t get angry at someone for enjoying their time a bit more boisterously than you, or vice-versa.
- OBSERVE QUIET TIMES
Keep noise level of talking, children and pets low + music off during posted quiet hours. Yes, the walls of a camper are much MUCH thinner than your house, which means you’ll hear a lot more than normal at night and have to allow some leeway for general noise, but for heaven’s sake that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to blast ABBA at 2:30 in the morning.
- SPEED LIMIT
Observe and respect the speed limit at all times and be aware of people, children and pets while driving. I’m not even making a joke on this one. Don’t be stupid.
- MIND YOUR CAMPFIRE
Check to be sure that campfires are allowed and never leave them unattended. FireSmart Canada even made their own equivalent to Smokey the bear. I have to say, Ember the fox is much cuter. So, win Canada on fire safety mascots!
- KEEP A TIDY CAMPSITE
Pick up all food and garbage throughout the day and clean and organize the site at the end of the night. Bears, bugs, a curious toddler; avoid unwanted company or damage to yourself or your stuff by keeping tidy.
- KEEP ALL FACILITIES CLEAN
Pick up after yourself and report any spills or broken equipment immediately. This is not just polite but helps promote a healthy and safe environment for everyone.
- BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER
Keep your pets leashed or in your control and always pick up after them. It doesn’t matter if Fluffy is the sweetest boy around, other pets might not be.
- FOLLOW ALL CAMPGROUND RULES
Be aware of all campground rules to ensure that everyone enjoys their time and stays safe.
- COMMUNICATE ANY ISSUES
Let the campground managers know if there are any issues that need to be solved. Be polite, they’re doing their best and if they aren’t there no one gets to enjoy the campground.
