Activities in the Rockies if You Hate Hiking

Ask any fan of the Rockies and they’ll probably have a hiking story under their belt. Buuuuut hiking isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so what is the draw if you’re not one of the rocky mountain climbers? Check it out!

Banff

Just a quick hop skip and a jump from Calgary is Banff, a center of culture, science, nature, and beauty. Heck, just a stroll down Banff Avenue is an activity unto itself with its restaurants, shops, and art installations. But there’s more to this scenic mountain town than shopping and good food.

How about heading up?

You can still see great views without making the climb yourself with one of the Rockies’ gondola experiences. There’s the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain with an incredible boardwalk; the Lake Louise Sightseeing Gondola as well as the Sunshine Sightseeing Gondola.

If heights aren’ your idea of fun, you can always dip into an art gallery, head down Banff Ave for some shopping (all with gorgeous mountain peaks high above), or make an appointment at one of the numerous spas! Treat yourself to a mountainside massage or facial.

Sticking to outdoor activities? Go for a relaxing paddle at the Banff Canoe Club where you can rent kayaks, canoes, or even paddleboards to hit the water. Take a horseback trail ride with Banff Trail Riders so you can explore without being the one to do all the walking (some follow hiking paths so you can get a similar experience).

You can also check out the historic sites, like the Cave and Basin site we’ve previously explored, or the Banff Park Museum

Canmore and Kananaskis

Of course Banff can get a little crowded, but there are other nearby options like Canmore and Kananaskis Village. Get that spa rejuvenation at the Kananaskis Nordic Spa, golf at the Silvertip Resort, or take to the trails with a bike rental from Gear Up Mountain Sport and Rentals. There are plenty of easy routes to take if you’re looking for a leisurely ride like Policeman’s Creek. (If you’re looking for mountain bikes try Trail Sports at the Nordic Centre for the more intense treks).

We mentioned paddleboarding up in Banff, but you can also try it thanks to Bow Valley SUP. Recommended paddle boarding destinations include Quarry Lake in Canmore, Rundle Forebay Reservoir, or going further to Lake Louise, Vermilion Lakes, or Two Jack Lake among others. Bow Valley SUP and other rental shops are sure to recommend their personal favorites if you ask!
